Thrifty Taste - An Interview with Stanleys Fruits Vegetables
Frugal Taste - An Interview with Stanleys Fruits Vegetables By, Melissa Alvarez After much discussion on what I needed to expound on, it at last came to me after I considered what Chicago entrepreneurs are confronting today: High charges, laying off workers, business the executives, and finding new clients. Thusly, I chose to compose an article about somebody whos been there, done it, and has the shirt: Peter, proprietor of Stanleys Fruits and Vegetables. Stanleys is a cute store and frugal choice (situated on Elston Avenue in Chicago) where everybody goes to get the most reasonable and excellent produce in Chicago. Despite the fact that I talk with individuals regularly for occupations, this time I was somewhat anxious. I immediately arranged a few inquiries to pose to him, and obviously set myself up to be dismissed from directing the meeting. Fortunately he obliged and said with a thick Chicago emphasize, Yea, you wanna do it at this moment? I laughed thinking, yes obviously, yet ill-equipped I immediately set up the meeting for Friday and kept on getting together inquiries consistently. Subsequent to meeting Peter, I understood we share a great deal for all intents and purpose. Great qualities, solid hard working attitude and our affection for food. I additionally delighted in talking with him about his items, for everybody knows my relevant pastime for food and preparing. Cooking + Family/Friends = Melissas Coping Mechanism On the off chance that you do a fast Google search youll discover LOTS of surveys on Stanleys, however you wont discover a site and youll discover no history page. Youll discover the location and a few photos of the store, however you wont discover much about how everything began, and how it keeps on being a triumph after such a long time. Its the story and exercises my own folks and grandparents showed me: Be acceptable to individuals and they will consistently return for additional, or when you commit an error, remember your good fortune, get yourself, and attempt once more. All and all, Im favored as another entrepreneur to hear these accounts and to do precisely that. Subside doesnt know this, however he showed me some significant exercises during our short meeting. As indicated by Peter, having a business is basic; its about aiding and making different people groups carries on with somewhat simpler, and moderate. 1. How on the planet do you all despite everything figure out how to sell with these moderate costs? Diminish: It would be simple and really false to furnish you with a system by they way we do it. Truly, it just returns to what my dad consistently encouraged me since I was 15. He says, 'I gotta sell reasonable items. On the off chance that they kill the client today how might they shop tomorrow?' As an entrepreneur as well, you need to realize when to change. Quality is significant and you simply cant cut corners on it. Your item needs to remain reliably great and reasonable. 3. Where do you get your items from? I should include, its all exceptionally yummy. Dwindle: The climate has affected a portion of the vegetables. It just hasnt been hot enough to get as much corn this season. Over 80% of our items are natural and we get it for the most part locally. From nearby ranches, to neighborhood tables. 4. You as of late presented a store. How did this thought come to fruition? Subside: Change is acceptable, isn't that so? Haha, my Dad just rang me one day and stated, Hey, you need a shop. Get ya-self a shop. So I did. We are appreciative for everything. We need to give individuals quality meats, and wellbeing still, small voice nourishments. 5. What might you say to entrepreneurs out there confronting this intense economy? You have to be working somewhere with an official mentoring scheme in place 3. This mentor has to be somebody senior to you who works at your company, and 4. You have to commit to structured, consistent meetings of a certain duration with your career mentor, time which neither of you may have. With all of these assumed provisos in place, itâs no wonder you havenât found anyone yet! The truth is, to find a career mentor, all you need is a vision of where you at least think you want to be in your career, the drive to get there, and the confidence to seek counsel from whomever you deem inspirational and credible enough to help you. With that in mind, how can you find a career mentor? Step 1: Ask yourself what is it that you need help with? It is important that you start the process of finding a mentor by assessing your vision for your career. Ideally, where would you be in one year, three year and five yearsâ time? And which obstacles are standing in your way? Donât narrow yourself just to the skills you are yet to learn, or the feedback you were given during your last performance appraisal. Think bigger picture. Do you have a tricky relationship with a colleague or client, and is this hindering your progress? Is fear or a lack of confidence holding you back? Remember, your chosen career mentor will be someone you trust, therefore they will keep everything you say confidential, so donât limit your thinking at this stage. To give you an example, quite a few years ago I was at a turning point in my career. I knew that I wanted to reach that next level, but there was something that was going to stand in my way I dreaded giving presentations, and it showed. I knew that if I wanted to achieve my career goals, something would have to change. I would need to find a credible mentor to help me build my confidence and master public speaking which brings me onto my next step. Step 2: Assess your network â" and think outside the box Once you have identified what it is you need help with, itâs time to find the right person to help you. Who in your life has overcome the obstacles that you are now facing? Are they where you aspire to be now? Who do you know who is just really good at the skill you want to develop or perhaps the job role you would like to do in the future? As I alluded to in the beginning, donât narrow your search too much. Whatâs to say this mentor has to be somebody who is part of an official mentoring scheme, more senior than you, or even somebody you work with? When searching for your career mentor, consider former and current colleagues, your friends and family as well as your other social and professional circles. To continue the story of my own search for a mentor â" upon realising what I had to do next, I thought about who I knew that could help me. In this instance it was a senior colleague who I decided to approach. This person consistently gave some of the most engaging presentations I had ever seen, and was, without a shadow of a doubt, the right person to be my mentor. The next step was speaking up and asking them for help. Step 3: Take an authentic and humble approach The way you approach your potential career mentor will depend on the nature of your relationship. If they are a contact from your professional network, I would suggest sending them a message first explaining how they have inspired you, what specifically you think they could help you with, and politely asking if they could spare some time to sit down and chat. Let them know the best number to call you on, and that you hope they would like to talk further. If this person is at your current organisation, I would also recommend that you run this by your line manager beforehand. They may be more familiar with your potential mentor, or have experience in mentoring themselves, and able to give you some pointers on your approach. The point is, your mentor needs to be outside of your direct line manager wherever possible. Whoever your mentor may be, the key is to be humble and human. In my situation I simply approached the person and said, âI would like your help please. I want to be able to deliver presentations as strongly as you can, if you could spare an hour or so and give me some initial guidance that would be hugely appreciated.â At the time neither of us knew how much or little time this was going to take but as it turned out, it was not a huge ask in terms of time commitment â" and it really helped me. Many years on, we meet on an ad hoc basis when I need their help and they are available to help me. But establishing and maintaining this mentor mentee relationship took work, which brings me onto my fourth and final step. Step 4: Nurture the mentor â" mentee relationship Remember, your career mentor is going out of their way to help you, therefore gratitude and respect is key to both establishing and maintaining this relationship. Before your first meeting, and every meeting from thereon, be punctual and well prepared. Note down the specific challenges you are facing, what it is you want to learn from them from this session and how you think they could help you. You should also share the progress you have made from previous sessions, and examples of this progress in practice. For instance, every time you meet your mentor maybe buy them coffee as a small token of your gratitude. I always thank my mentor profusely for their time, and relay any positive feedback from my presentations, moreover, how their previous advice helped me achieve this result. To this day my unofficial mentor is great at giving me two minute feedback after any presentation if they happen to be part of the audience. One good element, and one to improve. As I say, you donât have to tick a certain box before being eligible for a career mentor. You simply need to have a vision for your career, and a methodical, tactful, yet authentic approach to seeking out this guiding voice. Personally speaking, finding a career mentor was one of the best decisions I ever made, and is something every driven professional should pursue on their path to career success. And remember, bear all of this in mind the next time someone asks you for help too! Want to progress in your career? Answering the question, What do you do -
Answering the question, âWhat do you doâ - According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, just over 4 million Americans lost their jobs in 2009 alone. For those millions of people, a new reality has emerged that may include stress, financial difficulties, and uncertainty about the future. Many sociologists have written about the long-term psychological effects of prolonged unemployment. One problem thatâs often mentioned is the loss of identity experienced by people who are out of work. Think about it: When you meet someone socially, one of the first five things you will probably ask them is, âSo, what do you do?â or âWhere do you work?â For someone who has lost his job, this question suddenly becomes difficult to answer. Itâs a lot easier to say, âIâm an analyst at XYZ Bankâ than to say, âI used to work as a financial analyst, but I got laid off last year.â Because it can be difficult to retain your identity through a period of unemployment, itâs particularly important to surround yourself with people who know you as more than just an employee. Whether it be your immediate family, spouse, former coworkers, or closest friends, spending time with people who fundamentally understand, like, and respect youâ"regardless of where you work at the momentâ"is critical. Not only does time spent with family and friends help you to retain a positive sense of yourself, but it can also provide you with ideas for promoting yourself during your job search. Talents that may seem common to you often stand out to your friends. For instance, a friend may say to you, âYouâre so good at organizing events and connecting people, you should be running a nonprofit somewhere!â Or, âYouâre fantastic at explaining thingsâ"have you ever considered becoming a teacher?â The strengths that friends identify in you can be helpful as you market yourself through cover letters and resumes. As quickly as possible in your job search, itâs important to develop an answer to the question, âWhat do you do?â For the person mentioned above, an appropriate answer might be, âIâm looking for a financial analysis opportunity with a large bank.â Objective statements are no longer fashionable to use on resumes, but itâs great to have one ready whenever someone asks about your career! Succinctly summarizing the goal of your job search not only helps new acquaintances understand your situation but also allows your family and friends to think clearly about who might be able to help you from their network. People who know and love you provide invaluable support during a time of unemployment. Heed what they have to say about your strengths, and focus their efforts to help by having a clear goal for your job search. How to Respond When a Recruiter Emails
Instructions to Respond When a Recruiter Emails Instructions to Respond When a Recruiter Emails Envision yourself in this situation: you get a notice on your telephone that you have another message. You rapidly look at the notice and find that you have a LinkedIn message. At the point when you head over to LinkedIn, you understand that you have been reached by a spotter who connected with you about an opening for work . What occurs? In all probability, you are energized that somebody would really connect straightforwardly to you and considers that you are the ideal qualified for an occupation at their association, however then your fervor gradually begins to blur: maybe because of the way that you as of now have another activity that you love or maybe in light of the fact that the activity being offered doesn't have terms positive for you Because of the present tight activity showcase, enrollment specialists will connect with competitors more regularly than they used to. Be that as it may, as the individual on the less than desirable finish of a selection representative's message, how you react is significant. Here's the manner by which to benefit as much as possible from the exceptional open door before you. 1. Arrange the offer : Since you are the one being sought after, it will be all the more simple to decide the conditions of your commitment. Because somebody made you an offer doesn't mean you ought to acknowledge it with no guarantees. This is the perfect time to arrange the offer: you can haggle any piece of the activity including your compensation, your position, your advantages, just as work conditions. 2. Utilize the proposal to haggle better terms at your present place of employment : Even in case you're happy with your present place of employment, a proposal from a spotter could be a surprisingly positive development. Contingent upon the provisions of the activity, especially if more alluring than that of your present place of employment, you can utilize it to haggle better terms with your present bosses. On the off chance that they see that endeavors are being made to poach you from them, they are probably going to place in more impetuses to hold you: this could be utilized to arrange a superior compensation, better work terms, an advancement , or better advantages . 3. Assemble a relationship : Even on the off chance that you are not keen on the proposition for employment, be amenable in the entirety of your associations and endeavor to construct a relationship. The selection representative who connected with you can demonstrate helpful in more than the association the spotter is connecting from. By doing everything to guarantee there is a relationship (being well mannered regardless of whether you need to dismiss the offer, alluding another person on the off chance that you are not accessible for the offer, and checking in from time to time), you are situating yourself for better future vocation possibilities. It's anything but difficult to get presumptuous when a spotter contacts you, however it is critical to keep away from the accompanying entanglements: 1. Abstain from accepting that being reached by a selection representative methods programmed business : If you believe being reached by an enrollment specialist implies programmed work, you should reevaluate your feeling. While being reached by a scout gives you an edge, it doesn't ensure business. Rather than settling for the status quo, you should try harder and put in your absolute best effort. It is imperative to abstain from being easygoing in your methodology and reaction to the enrollment specialist. Clean your portfolio and occupation materials, underscore the one of a kind preferred position you will give the association that needs to utilize you, and be proficient and well mannered in your cooperations with the enrollment specialist. 2. Abstain from expecting that you're the main individual being considered for the opening for work : One of the most exceedingly terrible traps you can fall into when an enrollment specialist contacts you is that of accepting that you are the main individual the selection representative connected with - or expecting that you are the main individual being considered for the activity. As indicated by Simonetta Lein , CEO of the Simonetta Lein brand, Vice President of The Wishwall Foundation , and one of the best 100 design influencers on the planet, Probably the greatest mix up-and-comers reach them out of nowhere is that of expecting that they are the just one being considered for the activity. Due to this off-base supposition, says Lein, they put in little exertion into planning and situating themselves for the chance and frequently wind up losing it. She encourages responding to an enrollment offer sent to you as you would do on the off chance that you had sent a request for employment - as though you are one of numerous competitors. 3. Try not to put forth the slip-up of not placing attempt into your activity materials : You ought to likewise keep away from the trap of not investing enough energy into your activity materials. As indicated by Alex Jasin, the originator and CEO of Metapress , When a spotter connects with you is the point at which you should get serious about your exertion and clean your activity materials. Jasin says this is significant for a couple of key reasons, One, it enables the selection representative to legitimize the choice to contact you and settles on the choice to enlist you simpler. Two, in light of the fact that a spotter connected with you doesn't mean the enrollment specialist will settle on the employing choice - the selection representative could be amped up for you, and impart this fervor to other chiefs, however it's your materials that will truly carry out the responsibility. So what materials would you like to concentrate on? The typical ones you would concentrate on the off chance that you were the one looking for the activity: 4. Don't totally disregard the selection representative : While you may be at an occupation you love, it isn't really a smart thought to totally overlook the enrollment specialist. You probably won't need the activity at the present time, yet what's to come is to a great extent eccentric: regardless of whether you are at a fulfilled activity, Ayodeji Onibalusi, CEO of Effective Inbound Marketing , says it won't be shrewd to simply disregard the selection representative: Your organization could scale back sooner rather than later and you could lose your employment, you could get laid off, or you may later choose you need better vocation possibilities. He further says,Just in light of the fact that you're at your fantasy work doesn't mean you're destined to be at that particular employment until the end of time. It is consistently insightful to think considering what's to come. All in all, regardless of whether the open door is definitely not a correct fit now, what do you do?

How to Identify Creativity During Interviews
How to Identify Creativity During Interviews It is every employerâs dream to have a team that is self-driven, sets new goals and comes up with new ways to explore their challenges. They are the creative type, who value self-expression and consider fulfilment of their passion as a reward on its own. If you are one, you know what Iâm talking about. Creatives are highly sought-after and it is common to come across job postings that highlight the need for a creative approach. Thatâs a pretty vague term. Creativity, however, is not vague and there are certain traits that are common among all creative people. The common traits of creatives Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi, perhaps the most noted researcher on âcreativityâ, identified these common personality traits among creative individuals in different lines of work. Creative individuals are energetic yet highly composed. They possess focus and are enthusiastic but also have strict downtimes for self-reflection. They have a mixture of maturity and childishness to their character. The emotional immaturity plays a key part in their approach to problems. They enjoy a light-hearted yet disciplined environment. No wonder they pursue careers that make them happy. Creatives tend to lose themselves in fantasy that are grounded in reality. Their way of looking at life might seem bizarre but results in outcomes that people tend to relate to over time. They show traits of both extroverts and introverts at the same time. A sense of pride mixed with humility is characteristic of all creatives. They have a sense of their own proficiency but constantly aim for greater challenges. Creative people are known to be psychologically androgynous, meaning they defy gender stereotypes. They are rebels at heart but also show conservative notions. It comes from being coherent with their choices and knowing what they want. They are passionate about their work yet objective about its worth. Creative individuals can reflect on the standard of their own work which help them evaluate its limitations. They love to explore art, culture and new interests but have a low threshold for pain. Bad quality in anything they have a taste for repulses them. If any of the above seem true in your case, you probably are a creative type yourself. In that case, you would know a creative person in an interview. Itâs not always so easy though, right? So letâs build a list of idiosyncrasies to look out for in your candidates which will highlight them as creative individuals. Creative is as creative does 1. Are they observant? Creatives are a highly observant lot. It is not something they focus on. They just happen to observe everything. If you look at the works of geniuses like Hayao Miyazaki and Noam Chomsky, much of their work comes from a keen observation of society. They engage in people watching, capture nuances and can pick up on behavioural patterns. Check if the interviewee has an eye for detail. Their ability to gather information from subtle ideas will show that they are, indeed, a creative person. 2. What hours do they prefer working? This can be phrased as a direct question or you can lead the candidate to speak of their preferable working hours. Most creative people actually have odd working hours. Some feel productive in the wee hours of the morning while others might say they like working at night. Whatever might be the case, creative people have a distinct choice when it comes to when they like to work. They work the hours that work best for them. If the candidate voices a preference, it would suggest they get into their creative flow during that period. 3. How aware are they when they are in flow? Make them talk about something they feel passionate about. Creative people tend to lose track of time when engaged in activities they are genuinely invested in. But itâs important to keep time when it comes to business, right? Of course. But when you get better output by cutting a little slack, forcing a time schedule would kill the creativity that gives your team the edge in the first place. 4. Notice their dress sense How are they dressed for the interview? For startups that allow a casual dress code, most candidates would stick to what they feel comfortable wearing. If the candidate is a creative type, youâd notice their taste in fashion. Creative people have excellent taste and they know what works well on them. It would be a stretch to say all fashionable people are creative. But creative people are, for the most part, great when it comes to expressing their sense of style. 5. How do they rate themselves? Creative people tend to aim for bigger goals than others. They are always striving to achieve something more. They are their own biggest critic. So a creative individual would always see room for personal improvement. But they also happen to know their own strengths. Which means a creative person would expect a competent pay and might quote a higher package than your other candidates. 6. Watch how they communicate A creative might come across as eccentric at first encounter. If you pay attention, youâd see they have a personal approach to communicating ideas. This is a result of not conforming to the textbook approach and having their personal view of the world. They have a very clear grasp of the matters that interest them and discussing those would lead them to express things the same way they approach the subject in their mind. In fact, they are very good at getting ideas across in their own way. A candidate who shows these particular signs in their interview can be recognized as a creative type. It is important to note that hiring a creative or running a team of creatives is tough trade since they might not conform to traditional values. Often though, the outcome of their work is of far better quality just because they seek reward in improving themselves. 7 Best Tips for Your Elevator Pitch - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career
7 Best Tips for Your Elevator Pitch - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career Imagine you go to a job search networking meeting for the first time, and the leader at one point informs the audience that everybody will have a chance to stand in front of the group and present an elevator pitch. I vividly remember such a scenario more than 10 years ago at a meeting with close to a hundred people in the audience. It was at a time when I was in transition, and my spirits and self-confidence were at all-time lows. So, for the survival of what little was left of my ego, my psychological response to such an unexpected event that I was obviously not prepared for was to protect myself from a perceived potentially harmful experience. I instantly looked for the red exit sign above the door at the back of the room and vacated immediately. Ever since, though, I remain embarrassed about it and now recall the incident with humor. Since then, Iâve of course had countless occasions to recite my elevator pitch with pride and confidence regardless of audience size or type. The elevator pitch for all occasions Well, thereâs no such a thing as an elevator pitch for all occasions. The elevator pitch should be a sound bite or a statement made in front of an audience, and its purpose is to elicit further inquiry. The opportunity that arises after a good elevator pitch is to develop a dialogue with someone, and hopefully, the discussion will lead to a mutually beneficial relationship. The elevator pitch should not be a self-praising monologue, which typically is boring, non-memorable, and imitative of everyone elseâs. It is most important that the elevator pitch fit the occasion. An elevator pitch out of context can be embarrassing, to say the least. At a recent dinner party, I sat next to a man I was not acquainted with. After a bit of easy talk, I asked him, âSo, what do you do?â He replied that heâs a programmer in a small telecommunications company. At that point, I could have either dropped the subject or asked further questions. I did the latter, and so this turned out to be a pleasant encounter for both of us. The question is, how many elevator pitches should a job seeker have at the ready? Although no elevator pitch should be a memorized text that sounds like a rehearsed radio commercial, itâs reasonable to think in terms of three potential kinds. The first one should be a short recitation about 15 seconds long. All of your elevator pitches to an audience versus a single individual should start with your name at the beginning and end with your name again at the end. Also be sure youâre being heard loud and clear. Next, because one of the dangers is that the audience by now may be bored because everyoneâs sounding like everyone else who preceded them, you should insert something differentâ"something maybe surprising. One of my clients used to say, âIâm known to have saved a womanâs life.â That statement certainly drew everyoneâs attention and begged for follow-up at the end of the meeting. And thatâs precisely what that speakerâs objective and purpose were. Itâs best to briefly say something about what you do, to mention the kinds of people you help, and to list the benefits that result from what you offer. Please donât say Iâm an IT professional. What, the others are less than professional? Donât say Iâm an HR business partnerâ"as if other team members are not business partners. And donât say I am passionate about. Nobody cares about that except you, and your self-assessment simply wonât serve to prompt anyone to approach you after the meeting for a conversatio n. The second type of elevator pitch to a group should be about 30 seconds long. Here again, besides of course saying your name at the beginning and end, you can talk about what you do, possibly mention your title if appropriate, and include something unusual or provoking so that someone will want to seek you out later. You can mention what you wish to continue doing professionally, the geographic area you want to work in, and even up to three target companies youâd like to work at. Perhaps someone in the audience has connections and would be willing to make an intro. The third type of elevator pitch could be a few minutes long. It should be tailored for individuals and not for a group of people. Here again, the objective is to continue the dialogue and potentially find someone to have a longer conversation with later, with the purpose of mutual benefit. Once a conversation is progressing and thereâs common ground and interest, both parties could probably think of others who could be of help. And again, thatâs the whole purpose of keeping the relationship growing: mutual interest. Your voice Besides the content of your elevator pitch, the audience will hopefully be impressed with your delivery via your voice. If your voice reminds the audience of the tone they hear from their GPSs, youâll certainly be rememberedâ"but not in a positive way! Use your voice appropriately. Speak with clarity. Make sure you enunciate well. And project enthusiasm by modulating your voice, as opposed to sounding monotone. The pace should be at a rate that enables large audiences to understand what youâre saying. Many people, when they get excited, start speaking faster than normal, which detracts from the clarity of the message. People with foreign accents should not feel embarrassed. Thereâs not much they can do about it, and in fact, an accent could sound attractive, different, memorable, and, possibly, charming. Your body language and presence Do you remember a movie actorâs every line? Probably not, but I bet you could get plenty verbose when it comes to describing the scene or the background to the plot. Thatâs how the human brain works: we remember several-fold what we see versus what we hear. Therefore, your appearance is much more important than the content of your elevator pitch. Look at the audience, but donât swivel your head like a panning security cameraâ"which is our usual tendency in such situations. Stand erect and without shifting weight from one leg to the other. Donât cross your ankles. Find your balance. It is acceptable to use your arms but not in an exaggerated or melodramatic way. If your arm and hand movements complement and support your statements, then by all means use them. And above all, smile. Smile a lot, because all over the world and in all cultures, a smile universally means the same thing. It conveys positivity and well-being in the presence of others. The creation of an effective elevator pitch is challenging. It takes a lot of repetitions and several iterations before it will generate the intended results. Donât attempt memorizing the lines; only experienced actors can succeed with that. Memorize only the key topics you want to convey. Once you know your basic material and start to feel comfortable, the words will flow smoothly. And remember that practice always makes perfect.
